If your idea of the perfect beach vacation includes more than lazing in the sun, these destinations deserve a spot on your bucket list. From hidden coves and historic landmarks to wildlife encounters and cooking classes, they offer experiences you’ll remember long after your tan fades.

A new study from small-ship cruise company Sail Croatia ranked more than 40 beach destinations to identify the best coastal getaways for travelers looking for more than a traditional beach vacation. Researchers evaluated destinations based on the number of beaches, day trips, adventure activities, historical attractions, dining options, and nature experiences before assigning each a “Boredom-Proof Score.”
 
We asked travel experts who have explored these destinations to share the experiences that made them unforgettable.
 

Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia claimed the top spot for its mix of beautiful beaches, outdoor adventures, and rich history. Visitors can spend their days discovering hidden coves, exploring ancient archaeological sites, or lingering over a waterfront meal.
 
LaDell Carter, founding partner and lead luxury lifestyle travel designer at Royal Expression Travels, says the island’s magic is found away from the crowded beaches.
 
“During my time in Porto Cervo, I discovered that the most unforgettable beach destinations are experienced well beyond the shoreline,” Carter said. “We paddleboarded across water so impossibly clear it looked like air, snorkeled through crystalline coves, chartered a private yacht to secluded beaches only accessible by sea, and anchored at a family-owned waterfront restaurant where generations welcomed us with genuine Sardinian hospitality. Traveling with my family made every experience even more meaningful as we explored hidden corners of the coastline together.”
 

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town claimed the second spot with beautiful beaches and unforgettable outdoor experiences. Travelers can hike Table Mountain, explore nearby wine country, encounter wildlife, and drive the spectacular Cape Peninsula.
 
Justin Chapman, Africa safari expert at Go2Africa, recommends seeing the coastline from the water.
 
“Sea kayaking is one of the best ways to experience Cape Town’s coastline,” Chapman said. “Paddling from Simon’s Town or Three Anchor Bay, you often find yourself sharing the water with Cape fur seals and, during whale season, you may even spot southern right whales in the distance. It’s active without feeling rushed, and gives you a completely different perspective of the city.”
 

Crete, Greece

The Greek island of Crete earned the No. 3 spot for its mix of beach days, ancient history, and authentic local experiences. In addition to more than 250 beaches, the island offers over 1,000 excursions that include archaeological sites, hiking trails, mountain villages, and culinary experiences.
 
Doni Belau, founder of Girls’ Guide to the World, encourages travelers to venture beyond the coastline.
 
“There are so many things to do here outside of the beach. First you must visit Knossos Palace and learn about the ancient Minoan culture that predates the Greeks,” Belau said. “We do a fabulous cooking class here in an old olive mill on our trip. I’d also recommend going up to Kritsa for a stroll. It’s a charming, authentic village with lovely boutiques and cafes.”
 

CancĂșn, Mexico

CancĂșn took fourth place because there's plenty to see beyond the beach. Travelers can easily spend a day exploring ancient Mayan ruins, cooling off in crystal-clear cenotes, or visiting colorful colonial towns throughout the YucatĂĄn Peninsula.
 
Hristina Nabosnyi, co-founder of CheckinAway.com, says those cultural experiences became the highlight of her family’s trip.
 
“We wanted to experience the country’s culture and history, so we took a day trip to ChichĂ©n ItzĂĄ, the colonial town of Valladolid, and the stunning Cenote Suytun,” Nabosnyi said. “Walking around one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and swimming in a cenote for the first time made the holiday unforgettable. It gave us a much deeper appreciation of Mexico beyond its beautiful coastline. It’s the experience we still talk about most when we think back to our CancĂșn trip.”
 
Beyond visiting Mayan ruins and cenotes, travelers can snorkel coral reefs, zip-line through the jungle, swim with whale sharks during the season, or explore nearby nature reserves.
 

Phuket, Thailand

Rounding out the top five, Phuket impressed researchers with its mix of island adventures, cultural attractions, and world-famous beaches. Visitors can spend their days island hopping, snorkeling, scuba diving, or kayaking through the limestone cliffs of nearby Phang Nga Bay.
 
But Abigail Dalton, owner and creator of I’m Going On An Adventure, says one of the island’s biggest highlights isn’t found on the beach at all.
 
“I’ve spent months in Thailand, and while places like Phuket are often sold primarily as beach destinations, I think the Old Town is where the island’s personality really comes alive,” Dalton said. “I spent a few days here, and between the Chinese shrines, Buddhist temples, colorful street art, and tiny local canteens, the beautiful Sino-Portuguese buildings are worth discovering. I also feel like it’s a side of Phuket many visitors completely miss.”
 
The beach may be the main attraction, but these destinations offer plenty of reasons to leave your lounge chair behind, from ancient ruins and wildlife encounters to unforgettable local experiences.
