The Selma City Council has instructed the mayor to call a special election to fill the vacant Ward 1 council seat.
In a statement made Friday night, Council President Kennard Randolph said the council will forego appointing a council member to replace Troy Harvill, who was removed in June after missing most meetings since being reelected last November.
With the council's pass on making an appointment, Mayor Johnny Moss III will move forward with calling a special election and will announce an official schedule for that election.
“This action is intended to ensure that the residents in Ward 1 have the opportunity to elect a representative to serve the remainder of the vacant term in accordance with applicable state law and municipal procedures,” Randolph said in a statement from the council.
Randolph encouraged citizens to monitor official city announcements and communications for updates regarding the special election process.
“The Council President appreciates the patience of the citizens of Ward 1 and remains committed to ensuring fair representation and an orderly election process,” the statement said.
