New 483 area code to be implemented on Feb. 23

The new 483 area code overlay covering the 334 area code region will be implemented on Feb. 23. 

"The new area code ensures customers will have enough supply of new telephone numbers to serve the area," said a press release from the Alabama Public Service Commission.

The numbering resources for the 334 area code will exhaust by the third quarter of 2026, the press release stated. 

The implementation follows the mandatory 10-digit dialing period allowing customers to adjust to dialing 10 digits when making calls.

New customers, or those requesting an additional telephone line, can be assigned the new 483 code pending activation and that the implementation will not affect existing service for anyone in the 334 area code region.

The 334 area code serves Selma, Montgomery, Prattville, Pike Road, Tuskegee, Auburn, Opelika, Phenix City, Eufaula, Dothan, Enterprise, Troy, Greenville and a portion of central and southeast Alabama.

There will be no changes to three-digit dialing number such as 911 and others.
