An online petition aims to change the name of Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, proposing to name it after Congressman John Lewis, a leader of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960’s.
The petition is posted on organizefor.org and has so far gained more than 13,000 signatures. It cites the man that the bridge was named after as the reason for the renaming, who – according to an online biography of congressional figures – was a Confederate veteran of the American Civil War.
Edmund Pettus Bridge is a noted landmark of Selma, having been the site of several events of the Civil Rights Movement, one of which was Bloody Sunday. The petition proposes to name it after Lewis because of his leadership during that time and having been injured in the Bloody Sunday incident.
