The Town of Pennington will hold its Pancreatic Cancer Awareness and Shine A Light on Lung Cancer Walk on Nov. 14.Â
The event will be themed around cancer prevention, early detection, education, and memorializing those who have passed from cancer.Â
"Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Many people do not experience symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage," said a press release for the event.Â
"However, low-dose CT screening can detect lung cancer early, when treatment may be more successful. Individuals ages 50–80 with a significant smoking history may qualify for annual screening."
The press release stated that pancreatic cancer can be difficult to detect early.Â
"Although routine screening is not recommended for everyone, knowing your family history, recognizing warning signs, and discussing risk factors with your healthcare provider are important," it said.Â
Participants will be educated on prevention through healthy lifestyle choices, avoiding tobacco products, quitting smoking, physical activities, and getting screenings.
There will also be a memorial tribute for those who have passed from pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, and other cancers. Families will be encouraged to walk in memory of lost loved ones.Â
Participants are encouraged to wear white for lung cancer awareness and purple for pancreatic cancer awareness and to wear comfortable walking shoes.Â
"This is more than a walk. It is a time to remember those we have lost, support those who are fighting, and encourage others to take charge of their health," said the press release.
The event will be held at 4 p.m. at the Town of Pennington Park.
