A push by Perry County Commission Chair Albert Turner Jr. to repeal a grocery tax policy failed after it was found that the attempt was not made within a specified timeframe.Â
In a post on his Facebook page, Turner said that he had proposed repealing a 3% grocery tax on certain days of the week but after consultation it turned out that the maximum amount allowable was 2.5% and had to be passed 60 days before Oct. 1.Â
The repeal would have to be on all days of the week as well, Turner said. He added that property owners who might be affected by an increase in their tax could be helped.Â
"It would also allow citizens to directly feel some of the success that the county is enjoying on the financial side," he said.
Turner said that he would try again next year and push to have it repealed within the required 60-day limit.Â
