Retired Montgomery fire chief Jim Sutherland has passed away, said an announcement from Montgomery Fire & Rescue. 

Sutherland served the department for 27 years, beginning in May 1957 until he retired in May 1984. 

"Rest easy, Chief. Your service will not be forgotten," said the announcement.

Sutherland was chief for four years in the department and led it "through a period of significant growth and change." He died on Aug. 13. 

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of retired Fire Chief Jim Sutherland, whose lifetime of service and leadership leaves a lasting impact on our community," said a post on social media from the City of Montgomery. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and all who served alongside him."

Sutherland's funeral will be held on Aug. 17 at Boones Chapel Church on 2301 Co. Road 66 in Prattville. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by the funeral.
