“To affect your reality is to change your mentality,” are the first words you see on Erice Williams’ business card.
Williams is the founder and director of Rolling Youth, a nonprofit mentor program he established in 2014. He and his program coordinator, ShenekaStitten, are out and about in the city almost every day now, because they have partnered with the NFL’s Flag Football League.
“I’m excited to share that we have successfully partnered with the NFL Flag Football League and are officially bringing a league to Selma,” Williams said in a statement. “This league will hold to our vision, which is to create a brotherhood of committed and responsible young men who will be valued assets; this is achieved through building self-awareness and active participation.”
The flag football league is for boys and girls ranging from ages 4-15 years old. The fee is $90 per player, and each player gets an official jersey and a flag. Kids can register through March 29.
“We mentor young men between the ages of 12 and 19,” Williams said. “We give etiquette, career building and social skills. One of the reasons why Rolling Youth was founded was because we wanted to give those same skills to students, because I was introduced to that same thing.”
Williams said they are looking for mentors to help young men of the community.
The program coordinator has been working hard to get kids of Selma involved in the program. With the cutoff date fast approaching, they are now doubling down on their efforts. Stitten has decided to offer five free registrations through March 22. Early registration and family discounts are available now.
The season dates are: Combine on April 26, Meet and Greet on May 3, and the first game is May 10. The field location is Southside High School, 7975 U.S. Highway 80 E in Selma.
The Rolling Youth Organization also has sponsorship opportunities ranging from $1,000 to $150.
