The Local Farm Cooperative will celebrate Black History Month with "ROOTED", an event that focuses on black farmers and their history in Selma and the cooking traditions stemming from African culture.
The event is a partnership of Selma Center for Nonviolence, Truth, and Reconciliation, the West Church of the Nazarene, and Wilcox Youth Entrepreneurship Program (WYEP).
The program will start at 12 p.m. and will be followed by an educational segment at 12:10 p.m. on black farming, spoken word, visions from Youth Board members and other topics.
Afterwards attendants will gather at the fellowship hall of the West Church of the Nazarene, guests will served a feast blessed by Pastor Brenda Tyus and prepared by Tori Ratcliffe, board member of the cooperative and founder of WYEP.
Guests will be served cornbread, collard greens, fried and baked chicken, rice, peas, a garden salad with fresh farm produce, and desserts that include a dish from a young farmer titled “Akaiya’s banana pudding”.
