Roots and Wings 2024

Guests look at artwork on display in the Roots and Wings juried competition.

The 22nd annual Roots and Wings art show was held last weekend with about 40 artists participating in the juried competition at Arts Revive.

The event started with an opening reception on March 14 and winners announced on March 16.

Arts Revive President Ruth Talton said the event brings stories behind every piece of art that is worth telling.

“Not everyone’s an artist - I’m not an artist, but what I've come to find out is that every piece of art that is hanging in this gallery tonight has a story behind it,” Talton said at the opening reception. “It’s a beautiful story and a story worth hearing. It’s not just a piece of art, the artist has put something of themselves into it that piece of that art.”

Talton credited Arts Revive members for supporting art in Selma.

“We are so thankful for your support of Arts Revive,” she said. “I will tell you since my genesis with Arts Revive it has been an incredible engine to watch. The things that are happening in Selma because of the opportunities that have been presented to us, have been amazing and we continue to want to create good. Our goal is to build a community for the arts. The arts are a powerful tool. They bring different thoughts. They bring open conversation. They bring the ability for all of us to express.”
