Rotary Club honors fallen Selma officer with free lunches to first responders, frontline workers

The Rotary Club of Selma honored fallen officer Marquis Moorer with a thank you lunch for first responders and frontline COVID workers on Monday.

The club gave out hundreds of hot dog lunches to police, deputies, firefighters and other first-responders along with those working on the frontlines battling COVID at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church on Broad Street.

The luncheon was dedicated to Selma Police Officer Marquis Moorer who was shot and killed while on duty in late July. The club gave the Moorer family a proclamation honoring the officer that also declared all future first responder thank you days to be in honor of Moorer.

The officer’s mother, Monica, was brought to tears during the ceremony led by Rotary Co-Presidents Jerria Martin and James Steele Jr. and service committee chairwoman Armelia Oliver. Moorer’s aunt Sabrina Moorer Underwood thanked the club for the family. Also there were Moorer’s young children, son Marquis Moorer Jr. and daughter Makynlei Campbell.
