Although official football practices won’t begin until August 1, the 2022 football Saints are already hard at work.
For any team looking for success in the Fall, the long “dog days” of Summer workouts are essential. This is the time for athletes to improve on the field and in the weight room. It’s the time for coaches to push and encourage players while getting to know them. It’s the time when a team will build comradery while competing against one another. Newcomers will have the opportunity to step-up to become contributors while the returners have the chance to emerge as leaders.
Selma’s 4th year head coach Will Gandy, is well aware of the significance of Summer workouts and how they translate to the actual season.
“Our summer workouts are an important part of getting ready for the upcoming season because it is time for the players to get bigger, faster, and stronger in the weight room.” Gandy said “This will help get the team get into football shape for the upcoming season. By the time August get here we want to play like we train and that’s fast! “
Gandy has led Selma to become a perennial playoff team who’s also had multiple Division 1 college signees since his hiring in 2019.
The 2022 Saint’s are led by Senior Dakaari Nelson who recently committed to Penn State University after receiving scholarship offers from all over the country.
“We want to play strong, and we want to be well conditioned. One thing I can say about our team is the kids have been really working hard and myself and the staff are really proud of our young men.” Gandy added. “Probably the hardest working group I’ve had since coming to Selma.”
The Saints kick-off the season on the road August 19 at Beauregard followed Southside August 26 before the home-opener vs Holtville.
