The Selma City Schools announced the “tragic loss” of a Selma High student on Tuesday afternoon.

No details were given related to the death, but the school’s Air Force JROTC flag was lowered to half-staff in memory of the student who was a Cadet Airman First Class, according to a district statement.

Superintendent Dr. David Scott said the heartbreak can be felt throughout the community.

"Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his family, friends, faculty, and staff at our schools," said Dr. Scott in a statement. "This student made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him, and he will be profoundly missed."

Support services were made available to students and staff on Wednesday from counselors, representatives from City Blocks Wellness, the Selma Center for Nonviolence, Truth, and Reconciliation, and Summerlane Counseling LLC.

Wellness dogs from the HERO program were on-site at Selma High and R.B. Hudson STEAM Academy, which the student had previously attended.

“The Selma City School District stands united in offering support to those affected by this tragedy,” the district said in a statement. “We encourage our community members to reach out for help and lean on each other during this challenging time.”
