Salute Selma, Inc. will commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday with a series of programs and a gospel concert on March 7-9.
Themes of the programming this year will include education, the role of Historically Black Colleges or Universities, black women in judiciary positions and others.
“This isn’t just a reflection on history—it’s a mobilization for our future,” said Catrena Norris Carter, Co-Founder of Salute Selma, Inc. “Selma remains at the heart of the fight for civil rights. Now is the time to show up.”
On March 7 the Women’s Legal Symposium will feature a keynote conversation on "democracy and justice". The Legal Guardian of Democracy Awards will be presented to recognize Judge U.W. Clemons, Judge Myron Thompson, Judge Arnette Hubbard, Attorney Fred Gray, and Attorney Ernestine Sapp.
There will also be a posthumous tribute in honor of Attorney Arthur Shores, Attorney J.L. Chestnut, and Attorney Michael Figures.
The HBCU Educational Summit at Selma University will be launched that day to focus on high school students and will feature viral activist YelloPain, who will talk to them about civic engagement. The weekend Kickoff Welcome Reception at The Nest will be held in the evening.
The HBCU Educational Summit will continue on March 8 with the HBCU Presidents’ Roundtable and Black Legislative Agenda Roundtable at Alabama State University. Panel discussions will be held with civil rights leaders, and policy dialogues on issues that affect black communities.
The day will conclude with Senator Robert Stewart and 100 Black Men’s Fourth Annual Homegrown Soirée.
The Salute Selma Gospel and R&B Explosion at Selma Memorial Stadium
108 Dallas Avenue in Selma from 8 a.m. -1 p.m. on March 9 featuring CeeLo Green, Bishop William Murphy, and Asher HaVon. There will be food trucks, vendors, and national leaders, including the Divine 9, The Links, The Boule, Jack and Jill, and 100 Black Men.
“All of the rights we enjoy today came at a cost, and Selma was at the epicenter of that sacrifice,” said Abina Billups, Co-Founder of Salute Selma, Inc. “We have a responsibility to continue this fight, to honor those who came before us, and to make sure that history is not just remembered—but protected.”
