The Selma Area Food Bank (SAFB) will receive a 30,000 pound donation of food from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be separated and boxed on the America250 Alabama JustServe Service Day.

“I am deeply grateful to the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for including the Selma Area Food Bank in their America250 outreach efforts," said the food bank's executive director, Ryan Johnson. "This wonderful act of generosity and commitment to service will have a meaningful impact on the many individuals and families in our community who rely on the support we provide."

"The food we have received will go directly to people in need, helping ensure that households facing hunger and food insecurity will have increased access to nourishing meals."

The donation will reportedly feed approximately 1100 individuals with a week of groceries and meals.

“We are pleased to have this opportunity to work alongside community volunteers to prepare these donated items for families in the Selma area," said John Rawls, who is the Montgomery Stake President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"We know the Lord loves all of His children, and we are grateful to help do His work through efforts such as this. Community service is part of the American spirit. We hope to inspire others to celebrate our country this year by lifting others around them through worthy service to others.”

The donation was made in honor of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

“More than 30% of all volunteer hours in the United States are generated by faith-based organizations," said Cathy Gillespie, Commissioner of America250. "Service can unite us. It invites people from every background to work side by side, regardless of political or religious views.”

The separation and boxing will take place from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the bank's location on 101 Avenue C.
