The Selma City Council on Tuesday approved changing the Selma Police Department policy to ban the use of chokeholds.

Governments across the country have been discussing and approving bans on the chokehold form of restraint used by police officers in the wake of the death of George Floyd who was killed during use of a chokehold by Minneapolis police. His death has spurred concerns nationwide about excessive use of force by police officers.

Councilwoman Angela Benjamin made the motion for the ban and the vote was unanimous.
