Blood on Alabama Avenue after Jubilee weekend shooting

Blood remained on Alabama Avenue on Saturday, March 7, 2026 from a shooting the night before that injured six people.

The Selma City Council on Tuesday outlined a plan to address crime and nuisance issues tied to some downtown clubs.

During a work session, council members asked Interim Police Chief Michael Perry and city staff to conduct business license checks to ensure club owners and subleasers are operating legally. The effort is aimed at reducing complaints about loud music, loitering outside businesses and crime-related incidents.

The discussion is related to a shooting that injured six people in early March on the Friday before the Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee at a downtown business on Alabama Avenue where large crowds often gather outside.

Councilman Michael Johnson said he has received complaints about debris and broken glass in the streets near some clubs and asked city staff to investigate whether businesses are complying with city codes and licensing requirements.

“We’re not trying to shut them down, just get them to work with us,” Johnson said.

Council President Kennard Randolph said the city should make sure businesses are in compliance “for the safety of residents.”

Mayor Johnny Moss III said Perry is developing a plan following a meeting held last week and said he hopes to move the plan forward with council support.

Councilwoman Jannie Thomas asked city staff to review existing ordinances that could help address the issues.
