Selma High crowd

Selma High crowd at the game against Demopolis.

Gunshots fired in a neighborhood by Memorial Stadium prompted an early end to the Selma High School football game Friday night.

Selma Police say no one was injured by the gunfire that occurred several blocks away from the stadium on Dallas Avenue. Chief Ettice Brickus told the Black Belt News Network that no incidents occurred at the football game or on the premises.

The sound of multiple rounds of gunshots was heard clearly by attendees of the Selma High vs Demopolis game and prompted Selma coaches to order players to lay down on the field. Demopolis players ran off the field.

The gunshots came not long after the stadium’s lights went out, which took time to turn back on to resume the game. The incidents were unrelated.

The game was canceled at halftime as a precaution, Brickus said. The score was 56-15.

Selma Superintendent Dr. David Scott said, "We want to ensure the safety of everyone who attends our athletic events. We are appreciative of the Selma Police Department taking action to make sure everyone was safe."

Demopolis City Schools says they will contact Alabama High School Athletic Association to "discuss the events of tonight."

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call CrimeStoppers at 334-215-STOP.
