Selma Police Department

An interim police chief has been named to run the Selma Police Department as the chief is on administrative leave.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mayor Johnny Moss III announced the placement of Michael Perry to serve as Interim Chief of Police for the City of Selma. The city did not release background information about Perry.

Perry will have the job temporarily “to ensure continuity of leadership and the uninterrupted operation of the Selma Police Department during an ongoing personnel process.”

Chief Kenta Fulford was put on administrative leave on Friday by the Selma City Council at the recommendation of the mayor in a special called meeting.

Moss said Chief Perry will handle day-to-day operational responsibility for the department, which he says will help maintain “stability, reinforcing departmental standards, and supporting officers in the field.”

“Public safety is too important to allow for any disruption in leadership,” Moss said. “This action ensures that the Police Department continues to function effectively while established administrative processes move forward.”

The city said they will not comment on specifics of the police search process that includes a hearing for Fulford.

“The City of Selma remains committed to transparency, professionalism, and ensuring that all actions are handled with fairness and accountability,” the statement said.
