Selma moves to bid phase for Innovative Tourism Hub project off Water Avenue in Selma

A 1,200-square-foot pavilion near Water Avenue should soon go out to bid.

The Selma City Council at their July 28 work session received the plans for the Innovative Tourism Hub. The Hub is part of a tourism-based revitalization project funded by a Delta Regional Authority grant. The building will include meeting space, a concession area and restrooms.

“The innovative Tourism Hub is envisioned as a modest yet impactful indoor outdoor pavilion located along Selma historic riverfront,” according to plans submitted by the architect firm Seay, Seay & Litchfield. “The Innovative Tourism hub is intended to act as a catalyst for continued riverfront revitalization, setting a high standard for future development while celebrating Selma’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.”

The project should be up for approval at the council's next meeting.

In their regular meeting, the city council agreed to meet soon to define who will qualify to get free garbage pickup service. The council delayed approving the franchise agreement and ordinance relating to the city’s new curbside garbage pickup provider until the issue can be resolved.

The council also discussed whether the franchise should apply to commercial garbage pickup as well as residential.

The city council and a representative from Selcom, the company who installed the city’s surveillance cameras, discussed how to better coordinate repairs on the cameras.

The council approved almost $7,000 for the Selma Fire Department to test and certify their self-contained breathing apparatus, and they accepted a $7,000 grant from the Black Belt Community Foundation for a zero-turn lawnmower for the animal shelter.
