A Selma native is currently serving aboard what has been described as one of the world's largest warships, said a press release from the Navy Office of Community Outreach. 

Petty Officer 3rd Class Makahia Tolbert serves aboard USS George H.W. Bush, a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier that operates out of Norfolk, Virginia.

She is a 2023 graduate of Selma High School and has been in the U.S. Navy for a year as a culinary specialist. 

“Growing up, I learned how to be patient and how to listen,” Tolbert said. "When I first got here, I had to learn how to listen and be patient with my chain of command. I’ve learned that everyone doesn't learn the same way as I do."
