Selma organizations to host Martin Luther King Jr. parade on Saturday

Dallas County organizations are hosting a Martin Luther King Jr. parade on Saturday.

The parade will start at 10 a.m. in downtown Selma.

Participants will line up at 9 a.m. on Washington Street by the School of Discovery. The parade will march down Washington and turn right on to Dallas Avenue, then left on to Broad Street. Then they will march down Broad to Water Avenue where they will turn left and end at Riverfront Park. After the parade, the Selma Center for Non-Violence, Truth and Reconciliation will have their MLK youth day.

Attorney Donavon McGuire, who is heading up the parade, said the point is to promote unity throughout Dallas County. The parade is a joint venture between Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s local Delta Phi Lambda chapter and the Selma Center for Non-Violence, Truth and Reconciliation.

“One of the quotes from Martin Luther King, ‘We must live together as brothers and sisters or perish together as fools,’ is the theme of the parade,” McGuire said. “Even though we’re holding the parade in Selma, we want people from all over Dallas County from Orrville, from Plantersville, from Burnsville and from Tyler to all come out and show unity.”

Marching in the parade are elected officials, candidates running in the upcoming elections, representatives from many of the schools from around the county and more. McGuire invites everyone and any group interested to sign up and be a part of the parade.
