Selma Mayor Johnny Moss III said the construction company didn't notify the city of their plans to close multiple railroad crossings at once. “They should have allowed us to kind of work and manage through it,” he said.

Traffic was backed up throughout Selma on March 2 as multiple railroad crossings were closed for repair.

Selma Mayor Johnny Moss III said the company doing the work didn’t notify the city of their plans.

“The ball was dropped on their end, not the city’s end,” Moss said. “They just came in and started working on the crossings.”

Moss said the construction company should not have closed all the crossings at once. “They should have allowed us to kind of work and manage through it,” he said.

Moss said when he called the company, they assured him that repairs were underway and that most crossings had already reopened. “We’re still monitoring to make sure they are correcting the issues they had,” he said.

Some crossings required additional work or replacement, and Moss said the city will continue following up to ensure everything meets safety standards.

A few remaining crossings, particularly along the Landline Road area, were still being worked on as of the mayor’s latest update, but he said they were expected to reopen by the afternoon of Monday, March 2.
