The Selma Sun won two journalism awards in innovative categories of the 2020 Alabama Press Association Media Awards announced Friday afternoon.
The Selma Sun, owned by Kingfisher Media LLC, won first place for Creative Use of Multimedia for a video made by Publisher Cindy Fisher and videographer Chico Cleveland about redevelopment of the St. James Hotel that garnered nearly 7,000 views in June 2019.
The Selma Sun also won third place for a graphic with an education story “Making the Grade” by Cindy Fisher.
The Sun won their first APA award in 2019 for Best In-Depth News Coverage for a story that ran in 2018. The Selma Sun was purchased in September 2018 by veteran journalist Cindy Fisher, who is also CEO of Kingfisher Media, and has made a turnaround. The Sun has grown subscription and social media audience dramatically since Kingfisher Media took over and even won a $35,000 Facebook Journalism Project grant through the COVID-19 Local News Relief Grant Program to continue innovation and share of COVID-19 news.
“Kingfisher Media may only be two years old, but we are already making a difference in our community and producing innovative ways to bring news to each corner of Dallas County, specifically with video,” Fisher said. “We have more new products to come, so stay tuned.”
The Alabama Press Association reports the annual journalism contest included 98 publications that submitted 2,921 entries. The Alabama awards were judged by the Mississippi Press Association membership.
