The city of Selma is asking the community to help restore Memorial Stadium.

Selma’s Recreation Department has created a donation program to upgrade the scoreboard and improve the bleachers in the stadium.

In a memo to the city council, Selma Mayor Johnny Moss III said that a donor has already put up $17,000 toward restoring the scoreboard, but it will take another $24,000 to finish the job.

Recreation Department Director Gerald Barron will be sending letters to area businesses asking them to make a donation for stadium repairs. Donating businesses will be recognized based on the level of their gift.

If there is money left over after the scoreboard and bleachers are repaired, the city will paint the stadium and do other upgrades, according to Barron.

The Selma City Council Aug. 11 created a special account to receive tax-exempt donations for Memorial Stadium.

Memorial Stadium had been in poor condition for years and was damaged by Hurricane Zeta in 2020 and the tornado in 2023. A new track completed with $750,000 from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs opened in April 2025. When it opened, then-Mayor James Perkins Jr. said the stadium needed $3 million more in repairs.
