Selma will swear in the new Police Chief Ettice N. Brickus on Thursday in an official ceremony.
The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in the Selma City Council Chamber and is open to the public.
The Selma City Council in early September named Ettice Brickus as the next police chief in a 5-3 vote. Brickus, Selma's first female chief, was serving as deputy chief and chief of staff for the Montgomery Police Department and is a retired deputy chief from Baltimore.
Mayor Johnny Moss III, members of the Selma City Council, city officials, law enforcement personnel, community leaders and citizens are invited to attend as Chief Brickus formally takes the oath of office and begins her service as Chief of Police for the City of Selma.
“This is an important moment for the City of Selma and for the future of public safety in our community,” Moss said in a statement. “Chief Brickus brings significant experience in law enforcement leadership, organizational change and community policing. Our citizens deserve a police department that is professional, accountable, responsive and connected to the community it serves. I look forward to working with Chief Brickus as we support our officers, strengthen the department and continue building public trust.”
Chief Brickus has executive law enforcement experience in directing day-to-day operations and strategic planning, allocating personnel and resources, strengthening departmental accountability and overseeing public safety initiatives. She also acts as Chief of Police in the absence of the agency's chief executive.
At the Baltimore Police Department, Brickus served as Deputy Chief of Patrol and Executive Commander of the Special Services Section. In that capacity, she directed operations involving three major patrol districts and multiple specialized units. Her résumé also documents leadership of a district of approximately 200 officers and civilian staff, as well as extensive work in strategic policing, COMPSTAT, recruitment, policy development and organizational improvement.
Chief Brickus holds master's degrees in education and management from Johns Hopkins University and is pursuing a doctorate in Education at Gwynedd Mercy University. Her executive training includes Cornell University's Executive Leadership Certificate and the Police Executive Research Forum's Senior Management Institute for Police.
“Chief Brickus understands that public safety requires more than responding to crime,” Moss said. “It requires leadership, accountability, strong relationships with residents and a department that uses its people and resources effectively. This ceremony represents the beginning of a new chapter for the Selma Police Department.”
