Selma has its first homeless shelter in years.
Pastor John Grayson with Gospel Tabernacle Church Selma and partners A.T.A.P. Community Development Corporation and Sonlight Food Distribution Center opened a new shelter at 1827 Broad Street in late November.
The shelter is named the Winston Williams Shelter for the Homeless in honor of Pastor Winston Williams who passed away in September. A native of Trinidad, Williams was a staple in Selma for decades, helping youth with soccer and adults with ministry. Read more about the shelter in the Selma Sun's Jan. 11 print edition.
Grayson said the first two or three weeks of the shelter, there were only two or three people coming per night. But since the Christmas holidays, the 20-bed facility has "been packed full,” Grayson said.
