Members of the Delta Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will recognize academic achievement and community service during the annual John D. Taylor Scholarship Banquet on July 18.
The annual banquet will be at 6 p.m. at the George & Jeannie Evans Event Center and honors outstanding graduating seniors while recognizing local leaders whose service has made a lasting impact across Dallas and Wilcox counties.
During the event, the fraternity will award college scholarships to eight graduating high school seniors from Dallas and Wilcox counties who have distinguished themselves through leadership, academic excellence and community service.
"We know college is expensive, so we want to help open the door to their future," said Alabama Sen. Robert Stewart, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha and one of the Selma chapter's first scholarship recipients.
In addition to presenting scholarships, the fraternity will recognize several community leaders for their outstanding service and contributions:
- Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum
- Sarah Carter Craig, the last living founding member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.'s Zeta Eta Omega Chapter
- Louretta Wimberly, historic preservation specialist
- Mamie Williams Solomon, longtime educator and school board member
- Dr. William Stevens, M.D.
- Dr. André Saulsberry, superintendent of Wilcox County Schools
The banquet is named in honor of the late John D. Taylor, a respected Selma educator and founding member of the Delta Pi Lambda Chapter. Taylor dedicated more than 40 years to educating and mentoring young people through the Selma City School System, helping shape generations of student leaders.
Tickets are $30 and may be purchased from any member of Alpha Phi Alpha or online at https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/john-d-taylor-scholarship-banquet.
