C.H.O.I.C.E., a nonprofit in Uniontown, has brought a Smithsonian traveling exhibition to Perry County that opened on Nov. 11 to honor veterans in a meaningful and creative way.
“SPARK! Places of Innovation” explores the places, people and ideas that spark new inventions and creativity in rural communities across the nation. The Alabama Humanities Alliance is bringing the exhibit to six Alabama towns, with the showing at the Renaissance Downtown in Uniontown being the only stop in the Black Belt.
The exhibit will be at in Uniontown through Dec. 13.
“This exhibit is so important for our city because it shows the power of creativity and innovation right here at home,” said Dudley Long, city councilwoman for District 2 and leader of the Community Foundation of Uniontown. “This year, we wanted to honor our veterans differently, celebrating their service while connecting it to the strength and spirit of our community.”
The Veterans Day event, held in partnership with the Community Foundation of Uniontown, featured a dinner and a talk by Navy veteran Jonathan Rossell, who encouraged veterans to continue serving their communities even after leaving the military.
Veterans from Vietnam to Desert Storm shared their stories about life after the military and how they stay active and involved in their communities.
C.H.O.I.C.E. Executive Director Emefa Butler thanked everyone for coming and reminded all veterans and their families that they can reach out to C.H.O.I.C.E. for help.
To schedule your tour of the exhibit, call C.H.O.I.C.E. Center at 334-231-7019 or email them at center@choiceuniontown.org.
