It’s a Cinderella story without the glass slipper! Sophia P. Kingston Elementary was selected as one of 12 schools in the state of Alabama to be recognized as a Science of Reading Spotlight School (SOR). Sophia P. Kingston, who two years ago was labeled as “full support” school by the Alabama Department of Education, is now being recognized for their strong commitment to K-3 literacy and reading achievement.

Kingston’s achievements also included - meeting the requirements of the Alabama Literacy Act, ensuring all K-3 teachers participated in Science of Reading training such as Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS), and implementing effective strategies in the classroom.

Local Reading Specialist, Leigh Chappelle joined Principal Tamara Nelson and several SPK teachers gathered at the 2022 Mega Conference in Mobile, Alabama to share their story of success to everyone in attendance, including Carol A. Tolman, the co-author of LETRS.

During the 2022-2023 school year schools from around the state will visit SPK to observe how teachers are implementing these SOR strategies in their classrooms.

Principal Nelson commented to the Selma Sun “It is truly an honor to be recognized! The teachers, scholars and parents work hard each and every day! This recognition shows how “hard” we work!” Nelson added “Sophia P. Kingston, the “hidden gem” of East Selma, is truly committed to student success.“
