A recent rash of gun violence in Selma and Dallas County gave the 5th Annual Stop the Violence Rally on Saturday additional significance.
“We want people to realize that laying down these firearms is key. We have lost too many lives in this city recently, and it has to stop,” said Ward 7 Councilwoman Jannie Thomas, who hosted the rally near Selma University on June 12.
“With crime and murders happening seemingly every night, everybody should be here today supporting this event,” County Commissioner Vivian Rogers said. “We’ve had three murders within a week. It’s senseless. Rallies are good, but there has got to be more we can do.”
