A press conference was held on Monday in Selma by officials to announce that special events will be part of the upcoming Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee to honor Rev. Jesse Jackson, who passed away on Feb. 17.
“Rev. Jackson had a deep connection with Selma, and the Jubilee is honored and privileged to lift his life,” said civil rights lawyer and activist Faya Rose Toure.
On March 7 members of the Rainbow PUSH family in Selma will virtually join a Homegoing Celebration for Jackson in Chicago from the George P. Evans Reception Center and Safety Building at 2 Lawrence Street in Selma.
Jackson's son, Yusef, and his siblings will come to Selma on Sunday.
On March 8 service in honor of Jackson will be held with his children and other family members from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the George Evans Building.
“The Voice” winner Asher HaVon will perform with national leaders to participate after the Annual Martin & Coretta King Unity Breakfast.
“The events in Selma propelled passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Rev. Jackson was part of that, and he understood the power of the symbolism of Selma throughout the world," said Sen. said Hank Sanders.
"He also understood that the right to vote is the right that protects all other rights, and Rev. Jackson dedicated his life to helping secure and protect the right to vote for all Americans. Selma impacted the world, and Jesse Jackson impacted the world."
