The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act today with remarks and a panel discussion. 

"Civil rights leaders, elected officials, and community advocates will gather to reflect on Montgomery’s historic role in the struggle for voting rights, discuss ongoing challenges to fair and equitable access to the ballot, and explore strategies to strengthen democratic participation across the state and country," said a press release from SPLC.

Remarks will be delivered by Bryan Fair, Interim President and CEO of SPLC and Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed at 5:30 p.m. 

The voting rights panel will feature the following at 6 p.m.:

  • Tafeni English-Relf, Alabama State Director, SPLC
  • Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02)
  • Jeanette Howard-Moore, Foot Soldier
  • Margaret Howard, Foot Soldier
  • Local college students from the University of Alabama and Auburn University at Montgomery

The event is free and will be held at the Civil Rights Memorial Center on 400 Washington Avenue in Montgomery.
