State officials looking at Lowndes County intersection to reduce traffic accidents

State officials are looking at the intersection at U.S. Highway 80 and Alabama Highway 97 in Lowndes County in an effort to reduce the number of traffic accidents there. 

According to the Lowndes County Signal drivers are required to cut across four lanes on Highway 80 to turn left. But Lowndes County Engineer David Butts said that ALDOT plans to change it so that drivers have to turn right instead of crossing the four lanes. 

Butts said that when cutting across four lanes drivers are putting themselves into oncoming traffic if they are making a left, making it risky for them. 

While the state is working on making the change it is not currently known what the exact rule will be or when it will be implemented.
