Russell County Schools recognized April as the Month of the Military Child, a time to honor the strength, resilience, and sacrifices of children in military families.
On April 15, the schools participated in Purple Up! Day, when students, faculty, and staff were encouraged to wear purple to show support for our military-connected students.
Why purple? The color symbolizes all branches of the U.S. military by combining Army green, Marine Corps red, and the blues of the Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force. The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) uses purple as a symbol of unity and support for military children worldwide.
Another meaningful symbol of military children is the dandelion. Like the flower, military children demonstrate resilience and the ability to thrive wherever they are planted, even as they move from place to place.
Russell County Schools expressed honor in celebrating and supporting its military families and showing appreciation for their service and sacrifice.
