Russell County Sheriff’s office concludes second junior deputy academy

The Russell County Sheriff’s Office wrapped up its second annual Junior Deputy Academy on June 26, giving local youth a full week of immersive, hands-on exposure to law enforcement careers and leadership skills.

The program, held June 22-26, introduced cadets to a wide range of law enforcement functions through interactive training and live demonstrations. Participants learned about patrol operations, criminal investigations and basic crime scene processing. They also received instruction on K-9 operations, SWAT equipment and tactics, school safety procedures and coordinated emergency response.

In addition to technical skills, the academy focused on personal development. Cadets took part in physical fitness activities, team-building exercises and leadership challenges designed to strengthen confidence, responsibility and respect for others. Throughout the week, they met with deputies, first responders and community partners who shared real-world experiences and stressed the importance of service, integrity and making positive choices.

The academy concluded with a field day that included a friendly kickball game between the Junior Deputies and Sheriff’s Office personnel, water slides and a cookout for participants and their families. A graduation ceremony followed, during which each cadet was recognized for successfully completing the program.

The Sheriff’s Office plans to host another academy specifically for high school students in July. Officials credited the success of this year’s program to the support of parents, volunteers, sponsors and community partners who helped create a memorable and meaningful experience for every participant.
