Severe storms on Sunday caused damage to communities in Montgomery and Lowndes counties, says an announcement from the National Weather Service (NWS) Birmingham.Â
In the Montgomery Metro area straight line winds going 60 to 70 mph led to downed trees and tree limbs along with "minor to significant" damage to cars, homes and other buildings.Â
There were also downed power lines, including those across Interstate 85.Â
"The characteristics of the tree fall (namely the direction) and radar data suggest these damages were the result of a surge straightline winds on the south side of a storm that came across Montgomery," said the announcement.
"We've had many storms recently that have reminded us that it doesn't matter if the winds are spinning or not; straightline winds can cause significant damages."
In the Rolling Acres community at the Lowndes/Montgomery line an EF-1 tornado was confirmed. It reportedly had a path length of 3.3 miles and a width of 6.5 miles.Â
The report stated that two homes along Treat Road at the Lowndes/Montgomery county line were damaged by the tornado. There were also downed and uprooted trees.Â
