Terri Sewell has spoken out in an announcement on Thursday after she voted against H.R. 7567, or the Farm Bill, that she said will harm farmers and make cuts to food assistance.Â
According to the announcement the proposed bill would cut $187 million from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP for the next five years.Â
She issued the following statement:Â
"Despite our successful efforts to secure provisions that would benefit rural Alabama, House Republicans have made it impossible for me to support this Farm Bill by continuing their cruel cuts to SNAP," she said.
"At a time when so many Alabama families are already struggling with rising grocery costs, I cannot support a bill that would continue take food out of the mouths of hungry children, seniors, and veterans."
"Moreover, this version of the Farm Bill rubberstamps Trump's reckless tariffs and his war on Iran which are hurting Alabama farmers and contributing to the soaring price of food, energy, fertilizer, and farming equipment."
In her announcement Sewell touted "wins" secured in the bill, including the Rural Decentralized Water Systems Reauthorization Act to address rural wastewater and the SAWMILL Act to bring more resources for rural forestry processing to the 7th Congressional District.
There was also an expansion for research funding for 1890 Land Grant institutions and upgrades to agricultural and food sciences facilities, as well as the reauthorization of scholarships for students at 1890 Land Grant institutions through 2031.
Lastly she added a provision that she sponsored to include the purchase of hot rotisserie chickens as part of SNAP benefits.Â
