The Rural South Institute, also known as the Institute, has received a $1.86 million grant to expand its outreach and provide technical assistance to farmers in the rural Black Belt region.

Specifically the Institute seeks to help new, beginning, and small acreage farmers, as well as "distressed" USDA/Farm Service Agency borrowers, and financially challenged producers, said a statement on Tuesday.

“This investment strengthens our mission to uplift rural communities by giving farmers the tools, knowledge, and support they need to succeed,” said Institute Dr. Duncan M. Chembezi.

“We are grateful to USDA-NIFA, the Southern Risk Management Education Center, and the 1890 Universities Foundation for their confidence in our work and their commitment to underserved producers and landowners in the Black Belt and throughout Alabama.”

The funding was provided by USDA-National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), the Southern Risk Management Education Center, and the 1890 Universities Foundation.
