Training women in AI/technology

Applications will open in March for Upward with AI, an initiative in Selma to train women on how to work with AI in the workforce.

The 20-week program is presented by Rung for Women and brought to Selma through a partnership with the Selma Center for Nonviolence and the Partnership for Equitable and Resilient Communities (PERC).

“This is about more than skills,” said Lydia Chatmon, Program Director at the Selma Center for Nonviolence. “We know there are women in Selma who are working hard every day but still feel stuck. Upward with AI is designed to help women move forward with confidence, direction, and real opportunity.”

The inaugural cohort will have 20 to 25 women and will begin in April.

There will be online coursework, group coaching, and in-person sessions with the aim of helping women understand how artificial intelligence is affecting the workforce.

It also seeks to strengthen skills in communication, problem-solving, and time management, as well as interview strategies, building personal brands, using AI as a support tool in their careers.

“AI is changing how we work, how we apply for jobs, and how we grow professionally,” Chatmon said. “We want women in Selma to be equipped, not intimidated.”

The program will be held at the CITI Center in Selma and will run from April to September. Applications will open on March 2.

“There is so much talent here,” said Chatmon. “This is about helping women see what’s possible and giving them the tools to get there.”
