The Troy Police Department is warning residents of a scam by callers attempting to collect money to bail relatives from jail.

According to a post on the department's Facebook page, scam callers will contact parents and say that a child of theirs is in jail for charges such as DUIs and public intoxication or that they've been in a car crash.

The scammers will say that they will need money to bail out relatives.

"The scammer then gives detailed information on how to make bond for the incarcerated person over the phone or by sending money through Western Union or via Cash App," said the post. "They also may ask you to put money on a green dot card and then give them the access codes so they can draw the money from the cards."

The Troy Police Department states that it will never call and ask for bond money or any other payment. They advise anyone who receives a call like this to contact them.

The Troy Police Department can be reached at 334-566-0500.
