A 16-year-old male has been charged with assault in the second degree and illegal possession of a firearm after a female student at Troy University (TU) was injured in the foot by a single gunshot on Aug. 30.

On that day the student was taken to a hospital for treatment and released.

The suspect was arrested on Sept. 5 by officers with the TU Police Department, City of Troy Police Department and the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force.

An announcement from TU said that he was placed at the Pike County Jail.

“The local knowledge and years of experience of the Troy Police Department team tipped the scales in our favor and helped us identify a suspect,” said TU Police Chief George Beaudry.
