Troy University to premiere 'Beyond a War' documentary on Sept. 29

The premiere of the "Beyond a War" documentary about Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. and Duy Tan University President Dr. Lê Công Cơ will be hosted on campus on Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. 

The documentary is about the partnership of the two after they fought on opposing sides during the Vietnam War. It was produced by Duy Tan University. 

“What excites me about ‘Beyond A War’ is that it shows the transformation of the relationships between two countries that a half century ago were at war,” Hawkins said. “Today, not only do we recognize each other as countries, but we are working as partners."

"While we came from different backgrounds and certainly different sides of the war, our goal now is unity and a common focus on students. [Lê Công Cơ] is committed to building a great university and that is exactly what we are committed to doing at [Troy].”

Hawkins is set to retire on Oct. 1 after serving for more than 35 years at the university. He was a platoon leader during the war, said his bio on Troy University's website. 

At 3 p.m. the program will begin with a performance by music ensemble POPulus, followed by the film showing and a Q&A with Hawkins moderated by Alabama Public Television anchor Todd Stacy.

The event will also feature guest speakers, including Jack McManus, President of the Vietnam Veterans of America, and Capt. Gary Michael Rose (USA – Ret.), Medal of Honor Recipient.

The showing is open to the public and seats may be reserved here. It will take place at the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts on 251 Montgomery Street.
