Downtown Selma

The Alabama Poor Peoples Campaign and the League of Women Voters of Alabama are cosponsoring two candidate forums in Selma for the upcoming municipal election.

A forum for the candidates for mayor of Selma will be Thursday, Aug. 7, at 6 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1431 Broad St. The forum will be moderated by Rev. Mark Thompson, a nationally recognized radio and television personality, journalist and activist.

A forum for candidates for the Selma City Council will be Aug. 14 at 6 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church.

The forums aim to promote voter mobilization and civic engagement, and elevate community voices, especially those affected by poverty and systemic neglect, according to a news release from the Alabama Poor People’s Campaign.

The forums will also emphasize the benefits for government officials to engage directly with their neighborhoods to understand their community’s concerns and needs, the news release said.

“These events will foster dialogue between local candidates and their community which will help ensure that the voices of Selma’s citizens, particularly low-income and historically underrepresented residents, are heard and respected,” the release said.

Alabama Poor People’s Campaign is a nonpartisan moral movement dedicated to ending systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation and the war economy. The PPC fights for justice and equality for all Alabamians.

League of Women Voters of Alabama is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government.

Community Partners are the Coalition of Concerned Families, Dallas County NAACP, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and National Pan-Hellenic Council.

The election will be Aug. 26.
