Uniontown Arrowhead landfill

A Uniontown group is inviting community members to gather on Sunday to prepare written and oral comments concerning a proposed expansion of the Arrowhead Landfill.

Black Belt Women Rising will host a meeting at the Uniontown Recreation Center on 287 East Avenue Sunday at 4 p.m. to help citizens make their voices heard at a hearing scheduled for Nov. 18. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management will host the hearing at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 at Uniontown City Hall.

Citizens can express their thoughts in person at the Nov. 18 hearing, and ADEM will accept written comments through Dec. 22.

Food and dessert will be served for attendees who have already had dinner, according to Portia Shepard, executive director of Black Belt Women Rising.

Participants are encouraged to come prepared to start drafting their written comments to ensure their voices are included in the official record, Shepard said.

“Community members, local leaders and residents are encouraged to attend and actively participate in this important discussion about the future of the landfill and its impact on Uniontown,” Shepard said.

The owners of the landfill have filed an application that would allow them to bring in more trash, including coal ash.
