Uniontown City Council had a productive meeting on Monday night, adding a life insurance policy for full-time employees, discussing plans to fix the community pool and selling property for redevelopment behind the library.

Full-time employees will now have a $10,000 life insurance policy through Blake Taylor of Innovative Benefit consultants in Northport. The council heard options of other services which includes dental, vision, cancer, disability, and hospital coverage similar to AFLAC but at better rates.

The council agreed to clean up the Recreation Center pool and reopen it for the first time in many years.

The council also sold city-owned building behind the library for $1 to Pride Forney, who plans to renovate the property.

The city will also sell old city vehicles through sealed bids at Dudley Body Parts. The money from that will help buy a van for the adult daycare center.

After several meetings with discussion, the council agreed to appoint Portia Shepherd as District 3 representative of the Water Board.

Police Chief Watters recognized Jamarus Allen for trying to help the gunshot victim on Saturday by driving him to Whitfield Regional Hospital because the ambulance was 30-40 minutes away. Allen called Demopolis police on the way asking for an escort to get there, but he had a crash on the way when another car pulled out in front of him. The victim died of his injuries.

In the June 16 meeting, the council recognized the Street and Sanitation Summer Youth Workers. The first group for the summer gave a report listing their jobs so far, which included cutting grass and helping out at the adult daycare. The second group starts June 23.
