St. James Hotel reopens in downtown Selma

The historic St. James Hotel in downtown Selma reopened on Tuesday after being closed for over a year. 

Great hotels are not only appealing to travelers, they add value to the towns and cities they lie in. Such is the St. James Hotel by Marriott, Selma’s flagship quarter that is seated in the middle of the city and proudly on the Alabama River on Water Avenue Downtown in The District. 

The boutique hotel that was once a Hilton brand is now a Marriott series brand, and owners Jim and Kelly Lewis said they have great plans in store for the locals and tourists who frequently visit Selma. This restoration that started in 2020 has certainly been a labor of love in many regards and a testament of those who have a part in its return.

Jim Lewis, when asked how he felt about the reopening finally arriving after closing in August 2025, started out with two words. “Big miracle.” Kelly chimed in excited about the team, led by Selma resident Cymethia Rudolph, and what guests will receive from booking with Marriott. 

”We’re very proud. We’re very excited about our team and our general manager, Cymethia. She is fabulous and we’re confident she and her team are gonna lead us into a brand new day for the St. James,” Kelly said. “And we’re just happy to be a part of it.”  

Kelly also expressed her excitement about guests becoming members of the Marriott family receiving their Bonvoy points and all the perks that come with it. Jim said guests can also look forward to wonderful guest rooms, a wonderful team, and Southern hospitality by the Alabama River. 

General Manager Cymethia Rudolph was clearly joyous that the reopening had come to pass. 

“I have been waiting on Sept. 15, and it has finally come,” she smiled. “We’re gonna need Selma to support us. Selma, we are here for you and you are here for us. We cannot do it without you.” 

Rudolph named ways the locals can support — by booking weddings, family reunions and family coming to town who need to be housed. 

“Send them to us and we will take care of them,” she said.  After she added that other great things are on the way, like food and dining, she spoke directly to the citizens with, “Selma, I’m looking for you to have my back.” 

A very simple request from a team that has worked so hard to add value and quality to Selma.
