Jamon Newberry

Jamon Newberry has an arrest warrant out in a shooting death Saturday.

Selma police reports that the suspect in the murder of a Selma man on Dec. 27 turned himself in Tuesday morning.

Jamone Newberry voluntarily turned himself in at the Selma Police Department at 10:50 a.m. on an active warrant for murder and shooting into an unoccupied vehicle. Due to the nature of these charges, he is being held without bond pursuant to Aniah’s Law.

Newberry is charged with the shooting death of Jaquawn Tyus, who died while in route to the hospital after getting shot at 3 a.m. in the 600 block of Ravenwood Drive.

According to Selma police in a statement, detectives are “working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident” and that it appears to be an isolated event and no ongoing threat to the public.

"This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the victim's family and loved ones,” Police Chief Kenta Fulford said in a statement. "Our department is committed to conducting a thorough and timely investigation and hold Mr. Newberry accountable."

The Selma Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or whohas information to call 334-876-1259. Anonymous tips may be submitted through CrimeStoppers at 334-215-STOP.
