Update: A federal appeals court has blocked the execution. Read more about the decision here.Â
The execution of a man convicted in the 1996 murder of another man in Dallas County will take place this Thursday.Â
Matthew Reeves, 45, was convicted and sentenced in 1998 following the murder of Willie Johnson in 1996. According to an online copy of the case, Johnson was killed during a robbery.
Media reports say that Reeves' lawyers went to the Supreme Court last year and unsuccessfully argued that he should be spared the death sentence because his trial counsel did not emphasize what they said was his intellectual disability.Â
Reeves is to be executed at 6 p.m. this Thursday, Jan. 27 at Holman Prison in Atmore.Â
