The Akron Post Office will permanently close its doors Oct. 31 after the U.S. Postal Service was unable to renew the lease on the building.
The USPS said in a news released that all postal operations at the facility, located at 197 First Avenue South in Akron, will be suspended and services will be moved to the Moundville Post Office starting Nov. 1.
In the meantime, the Postal Service will provide a Mobile Retail Unit at the Akron location where customers can mail letters, pick up packages and conduct other postal transactions.
The Mobile Retail Unit will operate Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3:30 p.m., and Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. The unit will be closed on Sundays.
Customers who have Post Office Boxes at the Akron facility may pick up their mail at the Mobile Retail Unit during regular retail hours with proper identification.
Beginning Nov. 1, all postal operations will transfer to the Moundville Post Office, located at 259 Second Avenue in Moundville, which is 14 miles from Akron. Akron Post Office Box customers may also begin picking up their mail at the Moundville location that day.
The Moundville Post Office will offer retail services Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. The office is closed on Sundays.
The Postal Service said the closure is the result of the lease not being renewed. No information was provided about whether a new permanent postal facility will be established in Akron.
Akron residents on Oct. 1 started a change.org petition asking USPS to keep a post office operating in Akron. As of Oct. 19, it had 191 signatures.
